The burning question: Elections in March 2009, or not?

No one in Fiji seems quite sure these days whether the promised March 2009 return to parliamentary democracy is (a) highly probable, (b) only remotely possible, or (c) highly unlikely.

Why is this? Well, it's because the actions and words of the key players in the illegal military-backed regime are at odds with each other.

Elections in March 2009 - to be or not to be?
At the Pacific Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting in Wellington on 26 March 2008 Fiji's interim foreign minister, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, unequivocally re-affirmed an earlier promise by Fiji's dictator, Bainimarama, that there would be a general election by March 2009. All 15 of the other Pacific nations represented at that meeting warmly welcomed that undertaking, giving it their full and wholehearted support. But only a fortnight later the interim finance minister, in carefully chosen but deliberate terms, stated publicly there would be no election if there was no charter, once again throwing the election date into doubt. So, will there - or will there not be - an election? Please give us your opinion or comment.

We'd like your Frank opinion
Bainimarama, dictator of Fiji, at his Sunday 24 February press conference, was like a badly acted tough guy on a bad day in a really bad B Grade movie. Was that the best he could do? Is it that how "leaders" behave? Why preach one thing (governance, transparency etc.) but practise the other? Why claim that his military-backed regime cannot be moved because it wasn't elected? Why take no action on CHODOPU$$, the publicly accused tax cheat? Why remind everyone who has the guns? Is Voreqe Bainimarama scared? Or is he demonstrating that he's mentally unstable? Please post your opinions here.

What does the People's Charter mean to you?
The People's Charter is in the news. It seems it's all things to all people. The interim government is pushing it. But many oppose it. What do you think? We invite your comments and ideas.

Chodonomics: hope based on lies
The voodoo science of Chodonomics is now firmly entrenched in the 2008 budget. The one thing we know is that he will have a plan geared to his own evil purposes. Have your say on Chodonomics.

The year of ruling disastrously  means this forum is moderated; new post are reviewed prior to publishing.
A whole year is usually long enough in the life of any administration-we refer to Fiji's illegal "interim" government - to take stock of its achievements. But sadly, in terms of Fiji's national interest or the well being of her people, there are simply no "achievements" that we can see. Can you see any?

When will they start telling the truth?
A sensible person might conclude they have little choice. With a support base that's shrinking every day, Frank and Co. must be getting worried, their collective arrogance and pig ignorance notwithstanding. A simple solution to this mess: allow elections to be held ASAP.

A Charter for Dictatorship?
Behind the hollow rhetoric of the charter is an intention that's obvious. All who do not fall into step with its processes will become outcasts, unable to participate in the political life of the nation. It's just another sinister step down the track to dictatorship.

It's the Economy, Stupid!
The key to building confidence for investors is legal certainty. The best thing the illegal government could do to instill confidence is to resign, go and restore a legal regime.

How long can this regime last?
Do not despair. These evil days will pass.No matter how acquiescent the public may seem, the regime is doomed. it has no legitimacy, either legally or politically.

The Question of Crime: Fact versus Fiction
It seems that the coupsters are mentioning crime a lot less than they used to. However, crime is about the same now as before the coup. Is the regime really doing anything about crime? Or are they contributing to it?

Non-violent Opposition
Let's pool our ideas on the best way to oppose the illegal junta. Let a hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools of thought contend! But no violence, please. The power to heal a nation does not grow out of the barrel of a gun.
